How UWA came into life
UWA was formerly known as „Friends of Kwanta – Ghana“. Gudrun Bruckner, Renate Wieser and Gertraud Streßler did their voluntary service in the community of Awudome Kwanta in Ghana. After they came back to Austria, they founded “Friends of Kwanta”, so they could support Kwanta from Austria and encourage an exchange between Austria and Ghana. Successful projects followed, like working on the kindergarten of the community, the establishing of a small library and – quite recently – our biggest project, “Light for Kwanta”. During “Light for Kwanta”, we installed a photo-voltaic-system for the library together with the people of Kwanta and hold workshops about alternative energy systems.

This project did not only benefit from the cooperation with our friends from Kwanta, but it gave us the possibility to learn how important every single person is for bringing a project into life. While preparing the project, everyone brought his individual strengths and experiences into our work – on a professional and personal basis. To put in one´s own individual abilities has become one of our main principles.
Time has passed since our last project and new members have enriched UWA and brought new and exciting ideas. Together we have discussed about what we want to achieve in the future and what we stand for. The result is UWA. Our main principles are embedded in the statutes of our organization and we are looking forward to work on new projects, no matter if they take place in Austria, Ghana or any other place in the world. Together we want to contribute to a better understanding of each other.
